Couple of Questions on Float Adj. 4 Years, 1 Month ago
Still having mileage problems, down to 29 to 32 MPG.
Went out and did a about 250 miles this Sunday so I
know theres no old gas in there now.Was doing 70 to 75
and in the past I Would get loew to mid 40`s.
The last thing I did was adjust the Float level(dry method).
My question is do the jets actually sit submerged in the
gas or are they slightly above fuel level? My current
settins would suggest that I`m near where I should be or
a little lean.Bike runs good and idles well, tho with the
main I have in now have lost some top end.
Mik main 167.5,stock pilot,PMS at 3 1/4, DynoJ/needle on 3rd clip
stock spacing. Frustrated, couse if the bike was running
bad it would be worse. But this mileage thing stinks
I use to be able to get 160 miles outa 4 gallons, down to 130

vegasdave, I don't really have any suggestions but hope your post will draw some help. I have made several changes and went from 40-44 to 38. Won't go into details.

Ive been hearing a lot of comments regarding the ethanol in the gas,, many folks claim less milage because of it...

Yes .... you first need to be sure that the changes you see are not a result of the gas you are using.

Next, if you were getting mid-40's, changed the float level and are not getting mid-30's then the poor gas mileage is probably due to the float level change.

The gas is 'forced' out of the float bowl through the jet because of the low pressure created by the flow of air through the carb throat (venturi effect). As the level of fuel in the bowl becomes lower a higher vacuum is required to draw the fuel up through the jet from the bowl. Vice versa if the level in the bowl is higher. Think of it as trying to syphoning gas from someone fuel tank ... the longer the hose the more you have to suck.

Actually Doc it dropped mid 30`s down to low 30`s.I tried the
(dry)method. So I`m going back in to check it again.
Don`t know how much effect my bags & stuff have added, but I
don`t here the Ultra guys complaining of mileage issues
I did find an interesting link and how the float effects all
the circuits, including the main.Since you and I both know I
can remove and change setting in under 2 hrs its ok,just a
pain. Maybe as we do sometime, see things backward I adjusted
slightly the wrong way

Not hard to do.

Looking at how the needle valve works .... the floast have a lot of 'slop' in them without affecting the valve ..... I'm skeptical about the dry methods. I need to take the carb apart and verify again.
