Front tire/rim removal for a new tire 7 Months, 3 Weeks ago
I'm new here on the forums, so I hope this is in the right category.

I have between 1mm-2mm left in my tread on my front tire, and it's time to get the tire replaced.
I can save $50 in labor by taking off my own front tire.

Any tips ?
It's a 2000 RoadStar 1600.

Put the bike on a lift, unbolt the axle, and drop out the tire. Simple as it sounds. I have custom rims though, so when reinstalling the tire I have to line up the spacers that go between the hub and forks. Can't remember if they were on the stock rim or not.

Between pulling the wheel and trying to balance the new tire... Uh, I just figure what my time is worth and let the folks who do tires deal with it... But, each to his (or her) own...

Thanks for the replies.
The guy at the shop told me that in order to get the tire off, I need to also remove my front brake calipers from both sides, although I might be able to get away with just one.

Any tips or experience I need to know before attempting that part ?

Thanks again,
and thanks for the warm welcome,

So that's how they increase the shop fees.

I've replaced the wheel without taking the calipers off. If you have problems then take one off but don't diconnect the brake line.

Still have not purchased tires ,had a little setback..We were talking about this before & I could not decide which way I wanted to go I need a little advice should I stick with the same rear tire size that came on the bike or should I go to a 160 ? Someone mentioned ( I think Musky ) that the wider tire may not be the best using factory cast wheels. I think I would like the wider tire but don't want to give up anything (safety or tire life) . I am in the process of removing the wheel myself every bit helps.

I purchased this changer and attachment from harborfreight.

You can use two jack stands and your axle from your bike to spin balance your wheel.
