Tank rust removal & treatment 7 Months, 3 Weeks ago
I was given a '81 Yamaha Maxim (XJ650H). It is a runner, but there has numberous problems. I am going through the ignition and fuel systems. There is obvious rust in the tank.

Question is, what product to use for rust removal and recoating of the tank?

I had a 1980 XS650 Special that I got for $500 from a guy that said he "just didn't ride it any more"...
Turns out he didn't ride it because the rear tank mount had no isolation bushings and the rear welds had seperated! That poured the first tank of gas I put in all over my thigh!... Man that stings!
So, it was back into the shed and off with the tank...!
The first thing I did was clean out the tank with this stuff... 'cause there was enough rust in there to clog a sink drain... and then, I relined the tank with a product called "Kreem"... It's a two part epoxy that looks like condensed milk and coats anything!
The only drawback is... it will destroy anything plastic...! So, strip the tank of everything you don't want melted... (nameplates, petcocks, etc.) But, I gotta say the stuff it fantastic! I got another 5000 miles out of that bike and then I sold it... (I think the new owner it still using it!)

I have an old shovelhead that has a tag dated 1991 in the shop. The owner has brought to the shop and asked me to get it going again. I bought a container of 4000 BB's from Wal-Mart. The tank on this bike is two halves. I removed the petcock with its screen and taped all the openings. I poured the BB's into the tank and flipfloped the tank around, poured the BB's back out and flushed the tank out several times with gas. Then I coated the tank insides with Kreem. They have a kit which is intended to treat a 3 gal tank for $45.49. I can get it for you at $32.40 per kit.
