painting chrome 7 Months, 3 Weeks ago
I have about decided to paint my headlight bucket black, I figure I will wet sand the chrome with 400, then prime and sand again with 400, then finish coat, does that sound about right? what do you think? all suggestions are welcome, as I have not painted over chrome before..

Try this

600
2 coats of primer or 1 coat sealer 1 coat primer
sand with 1000
2 coats base, tack between each coat
wet sand with 1200
2 or more coats clear

Thanks BigJ, looks like your suggesting a little finer on the sanding side of it. hadn't really planned on using clear coat, but its a good idea...I may have to paint the rest of the bike so it looks as good as the headlight...

It might be overkill, but thats the general process I use when painting most items, of course you can leave out the clear coat step if you like, it just leaves you finish to the elements.... these step will work with rattle cans as well. Hell, take pics of the before, during and after....

Hey Flash
I've painted several chrome pieces over the years, and always had to eventually redo it. If you want to go rattle can, just get the acrylic enamel areosol at Auto Zone, or any automotive store, but I would definitly get the clearcoat also. I painted my old CB750 ReCycle with it, and a lot of people can't tell it's been aerosoled.

From what I've read (never done it) you need to use a self etching primer.

If you paint it, sand with 400 then 600 and you'll need a self etching primer. It's easy to apply, just spray on. You NEED the etching primer, trust me! Them paint with a regular primer, gray or black, then hit it up with black gloss. I painted my rear fender myself, just waiting till I get the NICE paint on it.

But I recommend powder coat IMHO
