I had the same thing. I, too, put a thin felt pad between the belt guard and the lower frame. If you look at the screw where it mounts in the front, then look a little to your right and down, you'll see where the guard and frame are reeeeeally close together. The upper belt guard flexes a lot, so the slightest bump makes it clank.

I took a sheet of that felt pad you put on the bottom of lamps and such to keep from scratching the funiture. I guess the piece I cut was about 1" X 2". I stuck mine to the frame rather than the belt guard, but I don't really think it matters.

When you get that clank/rattle fixed, you'll be able to hear the next one, and we'll all chime in about that one, too.

Javawave.....If you pull the two 8mm screws out of the belt cover , and remove it , you Will see where it has been rubbing at (mostly where the swing arm is molded into it at). Put your "padding" in there , and you should be good to go. BB

Oh, and for anyone who might be reading this thread, I had a squeak coming from the upper belt guard, too. Took the mounting screws out, pulled the guard, pit some silicone grease on the rubber grommet, squeak's gone. Dry rubber and flexing metal make for squeaks it would seem.

My belt guard was not hitting the frame but the belt itself, so the felt did not do the trick. So what I did was remove the rubber grommets and bolted the guard direct between 2 stainless steel washers. I can't quite understand why the belt guard needs to be "isolated" in the first place. Not a sound from there since...

I've heard it too, but it seems to come from the front of the bike. My Virago 1100 made the same noise. Figured it had something to do with the front forks.
