Not sure what I need to do, but I can't seem to get better than 35-37 MPG, no matter how I jet this thing. Thought for sure I had it this time... Probably a little on the lean side, but running good with what seemed to be good mileage. Until I stopped for gas this morning. According to the gas gauge I had just under a quarter of a tank of gas, which meant I had used a little more than 3 gallons, with 128.9 miles on the trip meter, indicating that I should be getting right at 40 MPG. Wrong!!!! Damn float must be sticking a little because it took 3.6 gallons to fill it, giving me 35.8 MPG. Thats a pretty even mix of highway and in-town riding, but it still sucks!
So here is my current set up; HK 3" Dual Sideburners, air intake
ala Mr. Cancilla plus a cover, Barons ported manifold, DJ175
main, stock 35
pilot jet,
DJ needle with washer/clip in 3rd from top/spacer and
PMS out 3 1/2 turns. Accelerator pump has also been adjusted one turn out/richer. Haven't checked the float level recently, but it was good the last time I checked it....last spring. And my elevation is 600 ft.
So, any suggestions??? I know no two bikes are going to be identical, but if you are getting 40 MPG or better and your elevation is 600 ft. plus or minus a couple hundred, I'd like to hear what your set up is to compare to and see if I can't get back into this range. Curious to see if jet and needle manufacturer (Mikuni or DynoJet) is a factor. I also know there has been talk about "winter blend" fuel and how it effects MPG. But does it make that big of a difference and should I maybe wait a couple of weeks before making any changes???
I know I shouldn't complain as long as the bike is running good, but with gas prices creeping towards $4/gal (and hearing how others are getting 45-50 MPG!!), I just can't deal with 35-37 MPG.
Sorry for the long, drawn out post, but any help and or input is appriciated.
In The Wind,
Aaron
