Another thing that is often overlooked is having a "project tray," one of those little trays you can carry around that has all the compartments in it. When I have to take things apart or am working on something with lots of components, whether it's a bike or anything else, I can drop the various bolts, washers, connectors, nuts, spacers, pins, etc. into their own little places in the tray.
