Just a short feel good story...
Finally took a good ride on my Star. My 12 yr old got good grades and I promised him a trip to NY to stay with his aunt. He went last year so I asked if there was somewhere else he would like to go. He told me he wanted to go for a long ride.
That was "Heart Soaring" feeling #1. We're in Boulder,Co so I suggested Yellowstone, then over to Mt Rushmore and back. All he wanted for the trip was a pair of cut off leather gloves like mine, "Heart Soaring" #2. The first day was 367 miles and not a wimper from the back. I'd look in the rear views and see his arms out like he's flying, "Heart Soaring" #3. At Yellowstone we saw bears, elk, bison.....Ran into the World Horseshoe Pitching Tournament in Gillette(don't laugh, there were 1000 entrants from all over the world), caught fish in Bighorn National Park, walked around Devils Tower, and finally to Mt Rushmore.
As we were sitting there listening to the speaker and looking at the faces I had this grin on my face that he didn't quite understand.
I grew up in downtown L.A. In 1976 I was 19. I bought a new Goldwing ($2350 out the door) and took off east, no map, just east till I hit water I can't cross, turn around and go back till I hit water and find my way home from there. I was looking for a place to live, which is how I found Boulder. That was the first and last time I saw Mt Rushmore till now. Possibly the most memorable part of the trip.
So here I am, once again on a bike, but with my 12 yr old son in his cut off leather gloves, the heart is just soaring again, and some how a lifes circle was just made, but not complete. After 1850 miles we hit home, burnt and beat but smiling. He turns to me and says "Dad, next time I want to go with you but I want to ride my own bike", "Heart Soaring" #4. That will be Full Circle...
I hope all riders can have an experience such as this with someone so close.

I have ridden tens of thousands of miles on various motorcycles in the last 28 years...some of the most memorable rides were the short "coffee runs" and just tooling around with my daughter on the pillion...she and her husband and my granddaughter live in California now and we rarely see them...

Thank you for the memories...I am very happy for you and your son...a lifelong memory was made

Regards, Ted

Great story!

... and when your son gets to pass on the riding experience to his kids like you did with him, then the circle will be unbroken
