HELP !! Speedo, odometer, fuel gauge and turn sig 5 Years ago
Getting ready for Run For the Wall and all is well EXCEPT speedo, odo, fuel gauge and turn signal canceling just quit working. 2000 Roadie with 28k miles
When ignition is turned on, speedo and fuel gauge make normal swings but the fuel gauge only goes to where it was when last working. right now, shows about 1/3 tank but it is full. Looks normal but isn't working.
Low fuel indicator works properly though, thankfully.
About a month ago, it started acting weird. Turn on, needels swing forward and back as normal but fuel gauge wouldn't come up. Start out and see speedo not working and signals won't cancel. Then after just a few minutes it would go into normal operation. Sometimes it would take about 10 miles or so to kick in. Then about a week ago, it would take longer to kick in or not at all. A few times I could shut it off and restart to get it to come on but now it won't come on at all and I really want to keep track of my mileage on the upcoming trip. Expect to do about 10k miles before getting home.
Again, only speedo, odometer, fuel gauge and turn signal canceling are affected. Have factory manual but have not been able to track down the connection between the 4 elements or where to look for the problem.
Tank is off the bike and I've searched diligently for loose conection or bad wire, etc, to no avail. All wiring is stock.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

GP, I would disconnect the battery overnight, connect it the next day and see if that makes any difference. Sometimes the 'puter in the bike needs resetting (rebooting, in a way). Someone else may have a better solution.

My god, the same thing has been happening to my 05'. I only have 5,400 miles. It kept blowing fuses. I took it to the dealer and they said it was a pinched wire. I picked it up Friday night. Saturday I was out riding and everything blew again. I took it back to the dealer yesterday. Sorry that I don't have a solution for you but I have the same issues that you're having.

Sorry!

OK, thanks so far. The battery has been disconected since I took the tank off yesterday but have to go to work soon so won't be able to put it back together until later today.
It's driving me crazy as everything else seems to be working great.
Spent several hours working diagnostics per the manual yesterday with all systems checking out ok that way. Fuses all check out ok too.
Gonna hate to take off cross country without everything working as it should.

Well, the disconected battery (overnight) didn't help.
Put her back together, connected battery, turned on ignition, speedo and fuel indicators (needles) both swung full to right and back to zero, then the fuel gauge went up to 3/4 tank (but it is only about half full.It was showing 1/3 tank before taking apart. Started her up (running sweet) Reset the clock and went for a short ride. Running great but still no speedo, odo, fuel gauge or signal canceling.
Really frustrating.

GP, it almost sounds like the meter assembly itself has a problem. The signal canceling stumps me though. I've also been looking in the manual and can't find a common source for the signals. That's why I'm thinking the meter itself might be hosing you. Just my .02

Well, electronics isn't my strong suit but my gut tells me it isn't the meter assy. itself.
Something tells me it's a short/ground in the system but I can't find it.
Only because of the intermittent nature of the failur process.

Ok the needle swings on the speedo and gas guage...so we are getting power to the meter...and the gas guage seems to register initially...so I am thinkin the meter is OK...

Heres what we know

The self cancelling signals rely on the speedo..they cancel after you go 490 or 15 sec if you are moving...

The gas guage reads properly after a few miles..so it must want some feedback from the odo??

The odo and speedo simply wont work....if the meter assembly is OK...

SOOOOOO I am thinkin maybe the connection to the speed sensor has been lost or the speed sensor itself....

Now the speed sensor is located on the rear of transmission...You can see it from the left side of the bike lookin down past the transfer case three wires goin into it..it is held on with an allen bolt

...the wiring from this goes to the speed sensor coupler under the left side cover....

Remove the left side cover.... just at the upper left area under the cover the white plug roundish 3-wire plug assembly grouped with a large square one and a couple of others.....you can follow the wiring to the sensor...

Check this connection..corrosion... loose ????

My screwdriver is pointing to this connector in this pic

All that being said and done in the self diagnoses... if the speed sensor disconnected or short circuited the engine light should stay on or blink four times... so maybe we are barking up the wrong tree here...

That's the problem - no blinking diagnostic lights. The bike thinks everything is working ok. I was also wondering about the speed sensor last night when I was looking in the manual's wiring diagram, but couldn't match it to all that was going on (or not going on). <scratching gray head>
