Engine Knocking 6 Months, 4 Weeks ago
I have a new 2007 RoadStar (leftover). It has had the 'signature' engine knock when warmed up since I got it. If this is normal I can live with it. (Just buy louder pipes) What I would like to know is, if anyone has seen this turn into a larger problem?
Thanks
Doug

That "signature engine knock" is not an issue with the 1700.

The engine does get noisier once it warms up but it's hard to tell you if what you hear is 'normal' or whether you have a problem with yours. Unfortunately the dealer will probably be of little use as it's 'normal' is usually the response. You need to hear other bikes.

After I had changed my oil before I even hit the first 100 mile mark, I noticed the engine quieted down a bit (I don't know if I was hearing the same "knocking" you are though). I used a different brand than the Yamalube the dealer had put in originally. To be honest, I like the noises the motor makes. Makes it sound beefier.

I have an '07 Roadstar and it also knocks. Not what I am use to. I think it sounds like all the chevys with solid lifters that I have owned. What bothers me is trying to check the oil. I follow the instructions and the oil level never reads the same. After having the oil changed at the dealers the level was just at the lower mark on the stick. They told me there is only a difference of about 6 oz. from the bottom mark to the top mark.

uniquedoug these motors make noise and useally quiet down with synthetic oil but thats another debate

TonyG when you change your oil put only 4 qts in and forget about the dip stick it won't read the same two times in a row.

If the knock you here sound like a loud sewing machine tapping, thats what mine sounded like. After break in did my oil change to synthetic 20/50 and the only time I here the valves is cruising right about 85 slower no noise faster to much other noise to tell..

Mine still makes a gravelly gas ping kind of noise when giving her more gas. I'm not aggressive or anything and am running all stock intake, carb and exhaust. Took it to the dealer twice early on. They, of course, said it was "normal." Guys on the clinic have helped me worry about it less.

For me anyway, putting in 4 quarts only of synthetic oil and adding a capful of Marvel Mystery Oil per tank has greatly reduced the overall racket.

I have an 07 with 8100 miles on it. During start up you would here a clang clang until warm up. For an air cooled engine I dont notice much noise riding behind the windsheild. However once in a while I will here noises coming from the engine, like lifter sound but it goes away. I still use Yamahalube until this synthectic oil dispute is over. Dealer says no need for synthectic because motor was built to handle heat and oil is superb. Go figure.

Yammalube seems to be the worst oil to use. It tends to get air entrained and make the engine sound noisier.

Once you switch to a syn oil you should notice a decrease in the engine noise.

I noticed a big difference in engine noise when I changed to synthetic... Much less noise and the engine also seems to run alot cooler...Doesn't matter what brand you use but synthetic oil is better for the life of your engine. imho
