Alternatives to saddle bags 4 Months, 3 Weeks ago
I have really been trying to stay away from saddlebags for storage. I put a sissy bar on recently and am thinking about getting a luggage rack and bag that connects to the sissy bar.

My question is, before I sink a bunch of money into something I'm not happy with, will I be able to carry enough for me and the wife on an overnight trip? I'm thinking the luggage rack won't take the weight well, or that with the short sissy bar I won't be able to get a bag thats big enough to hassle with.

I have put a fairly large overnight travel bag (soft sided) on my luggae rack without problems. I spend alot of money on a leather Bag with matching leather roll bag that straps on top, I never us it... I use the soft bag. It more than fits enough for over night.

I have this and am very pleased. It's light, holds quite a bit, and fits on the luggage rack with straps around the sissy bar. And it's pretty inexpensive.

Hey Yamakaze
A couple I know both have their own bikes, and neither one wants saddlebags. They both use inexpensive luggage bags on the rear rack, but she also carrys a bag on the rear seat. About twice a year they try to get out a week or more at a time.
This is the rack you'll need to hook up to your sissybar.

I agree with Coach, thats the one I have and it just feels stronger than the one that attaches to the tail lights. this is the travel bag I have, but I dont use it, I use a big waterproof duffle bag.

i have heard that too much weight on the luggage rack can cause your rear fender to crack, i think there is a fix for it in the tech articles where you reinforce the inside of your fender walls with flat steel and epoxy, just something to consider

I'm cheap I use a regular old $14 back pack from WalMart modified to fit on the sissy bar and use a cargo net to help hold it as well as resting it on my luggage rack. My rack mounts to the rear seat bolt and the license plate mount.

If I'm putting more than 10 pounds in a piece of luggage for a bike trip, I should have taken the car.

I also toss a Tombstone bag on the passenger seat. Gives me a backrest and and I keep the quick-access stuff like camera and whatnot in there.

Box your stuff up , and ship it ahead of you to your destination. All you need to do is contact your Hotel. They told me: put My name on the package , my confirmation number , and arrival date. Presto! , all that extra stuff you didn't want to carry , already waiting for you when you get there. BB
