The pointy end has to be the pointer because it is the only end that will sweep through all three positions. The fat end can get to on and reserve but never too off. I just looked at the link for the petcock valve PDF and I've been running in the "reserve" position for the past 8500 miles! But, wait! That means on that 210 mile trip I took...
