My Bike is Dead 4 Years, 11 Months ago
|
|
OK went to start my 05 Roadstar and had no power, nothing, no lights no cycle on the dials. So what do I do, I decide to jump it. Bike starts, but then I hear a rattling noise by the front tire, not sure what it is. Bike runs for about 10 min, then I shut it off. Turn the key and its still dead no nothing. I decide to trickle charge the battery over nite, and the next morning still nothing.
I tested battery after removing it from bike and it registers 12 volts. Put it back in and nothing. I made sure connections were tight. Also checked and replaced all fuses, including the main fuse, but still dead.
Can anyone help on this one???
Mike

Have you added or modified anything electric lately? Possibly a wire vibrated loose? Any thing abnormal prior to this? Electrical problems are the "best" to cypher out. M2CTS.

List of possibles:
1: bad ignition switch
2: shorted wire (pinched/frayed/burnt/etc)
3: relay gone fubar
4: rectifier
Beyond that start pulling power to any accessories one by one then all at once. Again, M2CTS.

Also check out "key on/no power/no start" post. May help.

From what you said, I would suspect the battery. You said that it will start and run with a hot shot, but not with the cycle battery alone. Take the battery to Auto Zone and they will test it for you. Load test, specific gravity, etc.

If the bike runs fine after a jump, ( btw I learned the hard way that if you use a car to jump it off, make sure it's not running) I would absolutely suspect the battery. It may show 12 volts, but that doesn't mean it's not dead. I would get it checked.

Turk 182 don't worry about starting it with the engine running on the car. You need to take that battery to someone who can load test the battery. Just putting a volt meter on it doesn't tell you the true story. My 2cents

I personally have seen and fixed bikes whose voltage reg/rec. were destroyed by someone jumping a bike off a started car. Might not have happened to you , but it does happen. There is plenty of juice in a car battery to start a bike with while the vehicle is off. When the vehicle is running , you introduce the charging system of that vehicle to your bike , potentially causing an expensive mistake , as it can overload the M/C charging system and kill stuff. Best advice : jump a bike with the vehicle OFF. BB

What BB said.. If the battery in the car is up to full charge, then it wouldn't hurt the bike's electrics, but if the battery in the car is down, you have potentially 50, 60 or more amps that could be hitting your bike's system. It will not survive long under that kind of amperage..
