Re:My Bike is Dead 5 Years ago
Got the bike running. It was a dead battery after all. When I tested the battery it read 12v, but when I turned the key it dropped to zero. Lucky for me nothing got fried,no blown fuses and all electronics working. Also the knocking by the solenoid stopped. Just wanted to say thanks to greyphart, stanag, mark7, hardone2get, bigbear, and flashback for the help you provided me.

I personally have seen and fixed bikes whose voltage reg/rec. were destroyed by someone jumping a bike off a started car. Might not have happened to you , but it does happen. There is plenty of juice in a car battery to start a bike with while the vehicle is off. When the vehicle is running , you introduce the charging system of that vehicle to your bike , potentially causing an expensive mistake , as it can overload the M/C charging system and kill stuff. Best advice : jump a bike with the vehicle OFF. BB

WOW! I learned something new today.....thanks Mr. Moderator!!!!

My bike started doing the same thing but when I took the battery to the local bike shop they check the battery with a load and it maintained 12.5 volts. Any ideas or suggestions, I like to wrench my own bikes and wondered if any one has had a similar problem. BIGJOHN

Go to the auto parts store and get a tube of DI-LECTRIC GREASE. Go to Radio Shackk and get a can of tuner cleaner. Disconnect the ground wire from the battery. Go over every connection which is "bolted"; make sure that the surface the connector goes against is clean; make sure the stud or bolt threads are clean; make sure the wire terminal is clean; make sure the washer surfaces and nut are clean. Coat the surfaces with grease and reassemble. Every where there is a plug connector spray with cleaner and "plug & unplug:" several times to remove corosion. When you have covered everything connect the battery back up and see what happens!

My own bike quit on the road one time; luckaly about three blocks from home. Turn key on and nothing-no needle sweep, no clock/milage, no lights, NOTHING! Turned out to be the ground connection right at the battery.

Same as Clifford but...

stopped at a gas station...turned on ignition meter gas guage sweep ok... lights everything fired up ok...hit the starter..nothing

what the heck..acted like the starter was locked or maybe the solenoid...

just about to jump start in gear...(did this a lot at Americade with my Harley cause the jack starter wouldnt engage..wore out the wife pushing me down hill )

then I had a brain spark..pulled the seat... tightened up the battery connections..and off we go

so ..Clifford is so correct...bad or poor connections can do some funny things...
