Gas Mileage 3 Years, 11 Months ago
After riding 100.miles today on 1/2 tank of fuel fo which I think is really good mileage ?? I'm begining to wonder if the guy who installed my pipes and done my re-jet really followed Dyno jet's instructions as for stage -2 with after market air cleaner and pipes it calls for the 195-main and the 37.5 pilot with the needle on the 4.th clip.

Or maybe he just told me that he re- jetted the bike but didn't ? He said at first that we didn't need to re-jet just to install the pipes but I told him that DG-Hardchrome reccomended re-jetting after installing their pipes and then he said we'll lets do it.

All of the 100.miles were country roads 60-70.mph
I guess I need to pull my plugs to really find out if I'm jetted right or not ? At this point I'm confused because recently I was only getting around 60-70 miles on a 1/2 tank maybe it was due to the fact that it was a mix of in town riding and some highway.

I hope he didn't follow Dynojets instructions. Way to rich. In town will eat more gas than moderate speed cruising.

Musky,

Then why does dyno jet instructions for the 1700 call for the 195 which is equel to I think the Mik- 187 ??

You'll find most (not all) recommendations from pipe, air kit, and jet mfg will jet you rich. Rich is safe for them. But for you it will just waste gas and carbon up the motor. That's my opinion amywho.

Thanks Musky, I value your opinion, would it be safe for me to say that at 100.miles on 1/2 tank that maybe I'm jetted right my point is" I think that if I was jetted as per Dyno's inst, I probably wouldn't get roughly 40-44.mpg on the highway ? Do I need to pull the plugs to see what they look like ? I don't want to carbon-up my bike.

40 - 44 isn't bad mileage. Looking at the plugs is a good idea but it will only tell you part of the story. It is always good to know what you have in there for jetting.

dcoley.... Rather they say it or not...Stealerships will jet you rich 90% of the time. Reason?...they would rather have to fix carbon problems than replace an engine that they got too lean. If you smoked your engine after they rejetted it for you, because of it being too lean, They have to eat it, if it gets carboned up form being too rich...you must have done something wrong! Lugging, wrong gas, etc. And they get to rake in the cash trying to fix it for ya. Nice little system.

Well I'd be pretty damn happy with that kind of mileage...1/2 tank if your filling up prior to reserve is around two gallons in worst case you've used 2.5 gallons so you're mileage is somewhere between 40-50!!!

On my last fill up I got 21! So yeah I'm looking at jetting and the entire intake system.

I had the Dynojet kit in my 1600. It says to run a 190-195 main if you run pipes with open baffles and a BAK. I run both and my jetting is a 170 main, 35 pilot, needle set on the 5th notch (previous owner settings). Pistons have pretty good carbon buildup, black sooty pipes, etc.

I just kicked it up to the 3rd notch on the needle and relized I might have a leak in the intake manifold/joint....I sealed that and started kicking the needle clip up...no on the 3 notch and still way rich, but getting better. at least the electrode is now showing tan...hopefully the insulator will start showing tan. I'm moving up one more notch and also did the choke knob chop so we'll see how it runs now.

I run a cobra jet kit but all I used was the needle and set it on the middle notch and 1 washer and the whit plastic ring thats it and it gets 40 to 50+ mpg so it ain't too bad. PMS 2 rounds out and excel pump to a minimum. and where I live is 3500 feet above sea level.

Pipes are a little sooty but plugs have white porcelain and are clean.
