Dropped My Bike At Americade. Need some Advice 3 Years, 11 Months ago
Dropped my bike while cornering, miscalculated. Anyway the drop wasn't too bad and my Linbars Saved the day. But I have two issues:

I have an 07 Silverado (Blue and Silver) I have some light scratches on my front fender, which is painted. I also have some light scratches on my windshield. Can anyboady give me some advice on getting rid of the scratches? Maybe some polish? What should I use on the windshield? Please give me some advice on getting my baby back to her shiny self.

Thanks all.

Joe

If the scratches didn't go through the clear coat you should be able to buff them out. The windshield you might have problems with. The Yami shields have a coating on them that doesn't really allow polishing out scratches.

There is a product watch collectors (yes, I do that too) use to polish watch crystals that get surface scratches...it's called Crystal Clear...it might work on your windshield....you can find it on the 'net

Depending on how deep the scratches are on the windshield you may have to take some ultra fine 800 grit then 1000 grit (ultra fine) wet and dry sand paper to get the shield smooth so you don't see the scratch, after that take Novus #2 fine plastic scratch remover (for plastics) and buff out. Depending on how deep the scratches are you may be able to start with 400 grit then go to the 800 and 1000. The 400 will take the plastic down faster to start with.

The coating on the windshield Musky mentioned is a pain. I have two windshields...had a crappy one where the coating was coming off or bubbling...I took tape and put it on the coating and pulled off the take and off came the coating, then I cut the windshield down. Figured if I was going to screw up one I do it to the crummy one. Then I polished the windshield...works pretty good but nothing is as good as the original. I guess Lexan is pretty soft stuff that's why you can take a rock at 60 and it doesn't shatter like most plastic. But that also compromises the scratch removal process.

This is going to sound really scary... (because it is!)
But, when manufacurers process plexiglass (drill, cut, sand, etc.) they "heat treat" the machined edge (the part that turned translcent from the macining) using a small, "clean" flame, like a propane torch for plumbing... and LIGHTLY run the very tip of the flame over the cloudy edge or scratched face(This turns it clear again...)

I can't stress enough how little heat it takes to turn the edge clear in this process.
I've used this process on "normal" plexi, BUT!!! as Musky said... There's a coating on the Yami winshield... Not too sure if it will work bacause of that...
Practice with a scrap piece of plexi before you committ to your bike!
Good luck!
Oh, and sorry to hear about your spill in the first place...Glad to hear it was only minor scratches...

Probably a good idea to take the shield off the bike before trying this trick at home...OTOH, you could have a great story on how you got the new 08 FI Roadie

You can also take MEK (methyl ethyl keytone???think thats the correct spelling) and take a dab on a rag and run it across the edge that melts the lexan and makes it clear again also.

As Musky mentionned ... the Yammi windshield has a coating. If you try anything abrasive to remove the scratches .... doesn't matter how fine .... you will ruin the coating and will end up have a 'bad' patch.

So if you want it to look good, your choices are:

- leave it alone
- remove the coating on the whole windshield
