I had a hard time finding GL-4 oil almost every store I went to had Valvoline 80w-90 GL-5, MT-1 oil.. It does not say anything about being backward compatible so I emailed them and a valvoline tech sent me this "It is not backwards compatible, but the Valvoline Gear Oils meet both GL-4 and GL-5 specifications. The GL-5 doesn't supercede the GL-4, but Valvoline uses a non-active sulfate formula to be able to meet both specifications."
