Re:Another jet question 5 Months, 2 Weeks ago

OK... So I've got the work done...Thanks for all the help getting me to where I'm at.
Installed 167.5 main, Baron's Needle on 4th osition, PMS at about 2.5 (was originally 4.5 ) and ported the manifold to just where the metal was showing in the apex of the curves.
Throttle response is at least as good as it was before. Seems that the power curve moved up in the RPM range, seems a bit flat in the low range up to 2k (less pull/torque), starts easier, and most of the cough when blipping the throttle is gone ( carb backfire occassionally when blipping throttle in neutral). Did a WOT test and it seems to pull/accelerate at WOT which I think means it's a bit lean, but I don't want to kill my MPG.
Any suggestions? Should I move the clip or go to a larger main?

Did you do the WOT with the clip in the 5th grove?

Nah. I set it on the 4th per BAK jetting instruction.
Is this correct?... 1st clip = leanest at WOT and 5th clip = richest at WOT
I think it's cruising rich with the 167.5, so I can move the clip towards the top to lean it out right?

Can't do the WOT test on the 4th clip 'cause the needle can affect the outcome ... it needs to be on the 5th to get a correct reading.
Correct on the needle ... 1 is leanest.
Flat usually means not enough fuel. It can be flat either due to incorrect PMS setting or clip position. Also check that the float level is not too low.

Duh... OK... Now I get it. The WOT test is for dialing in the main jet alone. I didn't read the tech article close enough. I thought it was for dialing in the jet & the needle.
Anyway... I'll move it to the 5th this weekend and go from there. I think I also need to do the choke knob mod to be safe and sure would like to get an adjustment mod on the PMS like the Baron extended PMS. I'm tired of standing on my head with a mirror in one hand & a screwdriver in the other.

I recently bought the Baron's PMS and am pleased with it. I had the original Maxmix PMS and found it tricky to adjust due to the aggressive taper.

Well... It's been a while & I've been tweaking the PMS quite a bit to get it dialed in. I'm having trouble getting it just right. Bare with me here. I've got a few more questions again and I'm long-winded.
1- I can't believe I have to ask this, but... Is turning the PMS in leaning or richening the mix?
The deal is... I can make drastic adjustments to the PMS and it doesn't seem to affect the idle as noticably as I would think. However, it does make a difference in the throttle response while riding.
2- How could the PMS adjustment cause this?... I think is a bit wierd that if I turn it in to be 2 or a little less turns out, it idles OK, but it seems to cause the motor to "bind up' somehow when I crank it. What I mean is... the starter will engage and turn the motor just a bit, but then it just stops like it doesn;t have enough torque to get past the compression stroke.
3- Could an overly rich PMS setting cause/induce the carb puking issue? I used to have this issue occasionally and it had all but gone away until I started tweaking the PMS. (Coincidence?)
4- Is there any hope of completely eliminating the carb cough? It used to do it alot. It's gotten much better since I've done the BAK, jetting, etc. I leaned the accel pump all the way (excpet for moving the lock nut) and that made it almost non-existent. It still caughs occasionally just as I touch the throttle. I'm really tired of my riding buddies trying to poor cough syrup in my tank at the gas station.
Thanks!!!

1-turning it in is leaning it, out is riching it, turning it in until it lightly seats is basically off.
2-after 4 turns out on the pms its past its normal range and not doing much, once it gets past this range it's done all it can do so adjust your idle with the idle screw. Check your decomp. switch and make sure its working properly.
3-Quick story- My pms is turned out 6 times (done by the shop that dyno'd it). Why 6 times?, because it only has a 30 pilot jet; and I still get the "puh" or "puke" when I crack the throttle; because at 6 turns it is still starved for fuel. The answer is a bigger pilot jet. Stock is 35, I'm going to try a 50 thats what came in my speedstar kit and start at 21/2 turns.
4- I think I answered this in #3.
good luck!!!

OK, I'm confused... so if richening the PMS helps to eliminate the off-idle carb cough, then why does leaning (nearly eliminating) the accell pump help to remedy the cough? See my delimma? richen the PMS, yet eliminated the quirt? I've always thought of a carb cough or a carb backfire as typically lean situation.
The puking is a different subject/issue. This happens only after riding & I shut it down. Gas starts dripping from the the mouth of the carb. Posts here on the forum indicate this is a typical issue with the R*. My question is: Can an overly rich PMS induce/worsen the puking?
Thanks again for all the help here.

1. Are you turning the PMS slowly, 1/4 turn at a time and taking a shot between? If you just turn it too fast you won't notice the results.
2. I don't know how you determined the two to be related, BTW ... mine does the same thing and I've not noticed it to be carb related.
3. I don't think so. I believe it's due to some malfunction in the float bowl valve seat area. In your case, probably dirt.
4. Not completely. You can induce it by blipping the throttle. If it's coughing just off throttle then the accelerator pump is in to far.
