That's sad...very sad. It's like my area. We have a place called Atlantic Beach, years ago it was the place to go to have fun and party. All the people who enjoyed it as youngsters moved back as they retired to get a piece of their youth. After awhile, they realized it wasn't as quiet as they wanted so they eventually got everything shut down. It was loud and fun before they moved in, they should've moved somewhere else instead of ruining it for everyone else's future.

If this happens, I will not go back to Myrtle Beach.

This is all my fault - I should have kept the stock pipes on!
There is more to this than meets the eye and I think the city council is trowing out the baby with the bathwater. There is a second rally Memorial Day weekend that is for crotch rockets and that crowd is very rowdy, number of deaths each year etc. Many business close during this period just to not have to deal with it. I believe that there are racial overtones to this decision and that they can not ban one rally without banning the other. This places lives on tourisim - the massive amount of folks, vendors, resturants, bars, gift shops, bike shops etc. make an enormus amount of money during bike week. How the can strip these folks of a major part of their annual revenue is beyond me.

I'm guessing it's the people with big bank accounts and big houses that are calling the shots. The people who don't rely on the tourists to make a living.

If it really is a case of baby and bathwater it's a shame. I find it sad that the authorities in Myrtle Beach can't seem to punish the offenders and let the rest of the law abiding folks continue to have a good time.
I've never been to Myrtle Beach, but it WAS on my list of places to go on my bike. But if there's no rally there's no reason to go. I'll just continue to hit the Redneck Rivera in PCB. They seem to control boneheads on bikes fairly well down there.

Having relatives that live in the area, the unofficial word is that this is a swipe against "black biker week". We have something similar in Galveston. There are a couple bike rallies in the area every year and the black community picks one to especially make a presence. During that particular week, many of the business tend to close for "summer vacation". I've seen the businesses state (on TV interviews) that they can't afford the losses that come from that particular week. For those in the Atlanta area, think Freaknik at the beach.
From my experience with MB, this is no loss to me. But it is a shame that the whole rally idea has to be shut down because of a couple of bad apples.

Living in the burbs of Atlanta(and for a while, downtown)I can state with the utmost honesty that the demise of Freaknik had nothing to do with the people or their numbers and everything to do with uncontrolled gridlock traffic.
It was a public safety issue. Nobody could move: Not First Responders, LEO, no vehicle was moving. Yeah, there were some bad apples here too(really bad ones), but the majority of the folks just wanted to have a good time.

Mark - the MB rally is a good one. The majority of business are biker friendly. Most of the hotels set aside bike parking right at the front door, supply towels for cleaning etc. Come on down in 09 before it is gone!
