Stage 1 configuration 5 Months ago
Happy 4th of july every one!
I have attempted to perform a stage 1 configuration on my 2007 stock (AIS removed) r*. In Yamaha terms that is ignition module, carb kit, and breather. All of which are speedstar accessaries. I have installed all of the components per Yamaha instructions, 165 main, 50 pilot, 5th notch needle, 3 to 3.5 turns pms and have tried several different settings on both needle and pms. The bike runs good but won't idle and seems to run hot. Idles good 'till it gets good and hot (too lean/overheating?) Right now it is set on 5th notch 3.25 pms, runs strong but coughs spits and dies at idle without adding throttle. I'm thinking maybe a 170 main or a 52 or 60 pilot? do I need hotter plugs? Stock/unmodified exaust. Have I overlooked something? Rollover valve removed. Manifold nipple plugged. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Don't make me go to dealer!
Thanks in advance,
Steve

I would suggest doing at least stage 2 on your stock pipes or getting a more open set of after market pipes. If you don't want to do either of those go back to the stock air box and jets.

This is a bit off topic but want to ask a ?. Currently have stage 1 exhaust and just added the BAK. Will I get a performance boost doing the stage 3 mod to the stock exhaust? I like the looks of the stock exhaust on the bike and so far have not found any aftermarket I am just dieing to put on bike. Would like to boost performace if stage 3 will help. Plus the $$$ factor is in play since the oldest needs braces at almost 5k !!!! Thanks

HEY
I'VE GOT THE SPEEDSTAR CARB KIT ALSO. PULL THE 50 PILOT OUT AND PUT IN THE 35 STOCKER AGAIN. CLIP ON THE 4TH NOTCH DOWN. PMS AT 2.5 TURNS. START IT AND WARM IT UP AND TURN PMS IN (LEANER) TILL ENGINE STUMBLES THEN COUNT TURNS OUT (RICHER) TILL STUMBLES AGAIN THE BACK IN HALF THAT NUMBER. RIDE WITH THE PMS SCREWDRIVER. TURN IT IN (LEAN) 1/4 TURN TILL YOU GET SOME POPPING ON DECELERATION. THEN BACK OUT 1/4. THIS WORKED BEST FOR ME. YOUR SETUP IS AS THE INSTRUCTIONS SAY BUT YOU WILL HAVE TUNING PROBLEMS AND BAD MILAGE. I WOULD USE THE 170 MAIN FIRST TILL YOU DO THE WIDE OPEN THROTTLE TEST. (YOU NEED TO PUT THE CLIP AT 5 IF DOING THE WOT)
THE FACTORY INSTRUCTIONS ARE TOO RICH. GOOD LUCK, RIDE SAFE.

BY THE WAY BE SURE TO CHECK THE CHOKE KNOB. IT MAY NEED TRIMMED AS PER INSTRUCTIONS IN THE TECH SECTION. THAT WILL VOID A LOT OF TUNING IF NOT RIGHT.
