Engine Chatter / Vibration? 3 Years, 10 Months ago
This probably belongs in the Technical Discussion forum so I have posted it here. Any advice would be appreciated.

Just wanted to float this experience out there and see if someone has experienced the same issue. Bought my Road Star in late 2007 and loved it. Big step up from the Boulevard I was riding. Faithfully brought it in for it's 600 mile first service. At that point the bike had your typical big v twin engine noises. No problem there. Things slowly went down hill however. The bike has developed a chatter when maintaining speed in any gear. It sounds like the valvetrain but it is not constant. No chatter at idle and no chatter under load. Only when maintaining speed. Hit the gas and it goes away. I've tried the headlight fix, the tank rattle fix and the ring free treatment. Not any better. Tried different oils and fuel and that didn't lessen the chatter either. I'd swear it was the valve train. This bike will not do this until it warms up. I have been to 3 dealers and 2 have said it is normal. If so, why has it gotten progressively louder with (now 2900 miles) on it? The third dealer has said they do hear the noise also but don't know what to do. They had the bike a week and said if I want them to tear it completely down I will have to pay out of pocket even though I have 2 months remaining on my warranty. Any advice? Thanks!

First off, you say you have already had it to the dealership for the noise problem and you still have 2 months warranty. Have everything documented that they said it is normal, you should not have to pay a penny if this bike is under warranty.........but these big beast do make some racket at different rpms. Remember, your Boulivard did not have pushrods like the Roadstar. My wife rides the S83 (1400) Boulivard and it doesn't make the racket my Roadstar makes, so it may be normal.....A good remedy would be to cover that noise up with a loud exhaust, but not everyone likes loud pipes.

This is the first time I have participated and thought I may have posted in the wrong forum. Whatever you think is best. Thanks for the advice.

I have both stock and Cobra Dragsters available and tried both. Same noise is present with either exhaust. Noise is present at steady speed and is more like a valve chatter but not constant. Not high pitched.

I'm a little suspicious of my front brake pads rattling. A possible source? If I shake the bars when parked I can get them rattling quite a bit.

Many folks here have commented on noise from the brakes, so I guess it could be.. Try grabbing the brake a bit when you hear the noise and see if you get any change..

My nephew has a boulevard, and I will say this, it is a lot quieter than my roadie..

By the way, I locked the other post so no one will add to it, but it is still available to look at if you need to..
