Running lean I think 5 Years, 8 Months ago

Mileage seems ok around 42 per gallon,but when I shut her down I hear a whoof and sometimes 2 or 3 whoofs does this mean she is running lean ? And how do I adjust this out of her? Thanks guys.

Every time I shut down I hear a low "whoomp" sound, just once each shut down, I figure it's normal.

Thought I read somewhere in here that the whoof sound meant that the old girl was running lean and if this is the case I was hoping that someone could tell me how to remedy that condition. Thanks guys.

If you think your lean try turning the PMS out a 1/4 turn at a time and see what changes. You can always go back if it doesn't help.

Hey Musky, wouldn't it be better to run a bit on the lean side than rich to prevent the carbon build up? Naturally being perfectly tuned in is best for performance and everything, but just thinking a tad lean may be better. I'm getting about 41 mpg's so I think I'm about right, correct? I'm not easy on the throttle either, so if I rode a bit more conservatively I bet it would be higher.

Lean is good but a 1/4 turn on the PMS won't change the bike from too lean to too rich. It's just one thing to check. If it doesn't make any difference in the whoof then he can turn it back and start looking elsewhere. Once you have the bike reasonably tuned I think that alot of the carbon problems are caused by using too much choke, idleing too long, and not winding it out. Not saying hit the limiter all the time but I think a lot of people shift to early and spend too much time 1 gear higher than they need to be. I guess i'm saying that you can't tune it lean enough too keep all carbon away. You have to treat her right too.

Musky-
I am wondering what you think is good milage for shifting. You said that most people ride one gear higher than they need to be. Just wondering what you think is better mph per gear.
Ex:
0-10: 1st gear
10-20: 2nd gear ... etc.... (these are just loose numbers to see what you think).
I know that I cruise around alot about 55-60mph and I am usually in 5th. When I am down around 35-43 I am in 4th, 22-34 = 3rd gear, 12-21 = 2nd.

Soooo Does anyone think I am running too lean,and when cruising I never use 5th gear until 65 or over.

I can pay attention next time on on my bike but 1st through 4th I just roll it out. 1st gear is a bother but it has to be there. I don't start having fun until second.I go until it sounds like it needs to shift. Not to the limiter but up there. I never use 5th below 60. I've rolled for miles in 4th at 60. 5th gear is over drive on these bikes. If I want to get on it some I'm shifting into 4th at 60. There are people who push these numbers quite a bit with no problem. You can roll along at 40 in 5th and not hurt the bike but if you try and accelerate it won't happen. I definetly don't lug my Roadie. She HATES that. At least once a week I take it out and wind the bejeebers out of it through the gears once or twice just to clear everything up and let her stretch. I had to retrain myself from how I rode before when I got this bike.
All this is just my opinion and how I run my bike. Not carved in stone.

If your bike is running strong and you're happy with the performance, I'd doubt that you're too lean. I remember reading some of Odo's comments over on the RSR forum and he said that he'd actually tried to set up a bike too lean and was not able to do it without the bike's running so poorly that you wouldn't be able to tolerate the performance. Your mileage figures coupled with the way you shift would also lead me to think that you're not too lean.
In my case, I've tried to lean towards "lean" if you know what I mean (I ought to be a poet!). That was primarily as a reaction to the "sticky valve" issue that seemed to have some correlation with running too rich.
That's my $.02.
