I would first make sure your battery cables are tight, yeah check fuses after that. Could be a loose connection somewhere too.

Sounds like it might be a loose connection. Check the Battery terminals and see if their tight and clean.

if a lot of different electrical components are acting strange at the same time, it probably is a loose or dirty ground connection on the battery,
Have you done any work on the bike recently?

By the way, I like that word "bumfuzzled" I have expanded my vocabulary...

How old is the battery? Sometimes they will die with no warning. Whoops saw you had posted few months old.

sometimes you get ahold of a bad battery, or you may have something draining it, it's hard to say. If you replace the battery again and it happens again then something is definetly wrong somewhere else....may want to check the output of your charging system....

I know it doesn't draw much but remember you have a clock on there that runs continueously wether the key is on or not.
And like RoadstarB said sometimes you can get a bad one.

Re:i am bumfuzzled 5 Months ago
I just had my battery go bad but it was 7 years old
Its acted just as you described with the gage needles moving when Im turned the key back off, no fuses blown no spark at the battery terminals. Push started the bike to get home.
OK, the battery, when I hooked the charger up the meter did not show any current flow, No charge current on the charger meter. So the battery would not take a charge and when I put a voltmeter (or test light) across the battery and turn the key on, the battery voltage dropped to nothing, my battery was shot.
If your battery will recharge and can then start the bike it may be OK and your charging system may be at fault
