For what it's worth, I go into 5th gear at 70+ on hard accel onto highway. Cruise in 5th if maintaining over 60 mph. Anything lower, and the poor things lugging.

Hi Woody. I too am a Millwright and Industrial electrician. Notice electrician is second LOL. Anyway I will not say what everyone else said it is true.
I love your neck of the woods. Lake on the Mountain and sandbanks are cool. WELCOME.

Hi guys:
Thanks for the info. You have convinced me that my Roadstar is operating normally, and I will ride it accordingly.
However...The design of the engine does suggest that the owner's manual shift points should be correct. I am going to try to get to the bottom of the descrepency between the recommended shift points and the required shift points.

My R* hits the rev limiter at 40 in 1st, 60 in 2nd, 80 in 3rd. If you just shifted at half that you'd be fine.

The only time I'd even think about putting it in 5th gear at a speed of 31mph is when I'd be playing Leap Frog with the kids My bike doesn't even like 5th gear until it gets to a speed of around 65mph.

Are you going to slow down to 16 mph to downshift from 5th to 4th? Then what would you do? If you use the numbers given for km/h for mph instead it isn't too bad. My bike has a tach and 2000rpm gets 20,30,40,50,60 going thru the gears. These engines love it at and above 2000 rpm. We have had a couple of people say that they think there aught to be a 6th gear. What would you do with it? The ratio for 5th is .75/1.00 which is an overdrive!
