What gear are you in?

If in 5th and you're accelerating then try 4th.

It occurs in any gear. 55 mph in 4th 65 mph in 5th etc...

I did try to apply the front drake to see if it was the pads but then you create load and it stops.

Thats what is so odd. It doesn't chatter under load and the engine sounds excellent at idle. Only at a certain rpm.

It sure sounds like it could be the pads but why only when warmed up? That's what is confusing the dealer as well.

P.S I tried thicker and thinner oils and fianlly started running 20/50 Castrol Syntec (a blend) but did not see an improvement.

I'd hate to have to fight Yamaha over this.

Check the nut on your front pulley.

I have the same problem with my 2007 R* Midnight Silverado. It's the brakes. If I shake the front end, I hear the rattle. When I do it holding the brake lever, no rattle. Guess that's the way they are supposed to work. It's just annoying hearing them at speed.

Pulled the cover and pulley nut is tight.

Decided to give Yamaha a call and let them know the run around I'm recieving from the local dealers.

Discoverd 2 things. First, the dealer that had my bike a week never contacted Yamaha Tech Service for assistance. They got stuck and simply handed it back to me.

Second, the dealer that sold me my bike (10 months ago) never registered it for warranty coverage. I have to go back to the dealer to register my bike.

While I'm getting my bike registered Yamaha said they will contact the regional field service guy and call me back. Stay tuned!

Is your chatter rpm related?

Can you hear it when stationary at the same rpm?

Hi Doc,

No on the chatter when stationary but you can hear the front pads start to vibrate.

The noise is present just barely into the throtle when trying to maintain speed in any gear.

Update.....tried bending the front brake pad retainers and it did stop some of the brake rattle but after a lengthy test ride discovered the chatter is still there. Must be engine.

Got in touch with the general manager of the selling dealership and he was very helpful. He appologized about the run around and will contact Yamaha Tech Services to test/listen to my bike. Also made certain my warranty was finally activated.

changed the oil last thursday, went to valvoline 25w50 motorcycle oil, for 4 strokes, noticed on the way to the dealer the next day some noise, i thought something was loose, rode it to work, this week noticed it again, think its the lifters, i dont think it likes this oil, since after it gets hot it is making more noise thatn before i changed it, gonna change it again to synthetic and see if that helps, but it runs normal, no loss of power or anything,

Mine does this exactly since i rode it home 2 weeks ago. It's not the brakes. the clatter (metal on plastic sound) comes from under the tank and i can repeat the noise in any gear while moving by finding the right rpm... 4th 55mph or so 5th 63-66mph and 69-71mph or so...

lots of vibes to go with it too. the whole bike shudders from stem to stern.
the bike feels like it's way too hot and my right leg seems like it's on fire, and this going 65 mph.

one guy look over from his car on the interstate and looked at me like "what's wrong with your bike?"

it's at the dealer for it's first service. i wrote up about a page sngl spaced of problems i feel the bike has since i pulled it off the lot.

sigh.
